How old do I have to be to dragon boat paddler?
You must be at least 12 years old. There is no upper age limit. Our club has members still paddling in their 80s.

How fit do I have to be?
Dragon boating is suitable for all fitness levels. Introductory sessions allow you to paddle at your own pace at your fitness level. As you continue paddling your fitness improves!
If you are not sure about your fitness level to paddle contact your doctor and take their advice.
Likewise, if you have a heart condition, are pregnant, or have any medical issues which may affect your physical activity you should see your doctor for a clearance to participate.

What should I wear?
Dragon boating is a casual water sport. You should wear similar clothes that you would wear to a gym. It is likely that you will get splashed and become wet.
You need to wear shoes such as crocs, boat shoes, etc to protect your feet especially when entering or leaving the boat.
A hat and sunglasses are a good idea.
You should apply sun protection to any exposed skin.

What do I need to bring?
All equipment is provided for you including a paddle, lifejacket if you need one, boat and laughter!
We recommend that you bring a towel and change of clothes in case you get wetter than expected and need to drive home. There are hot showers and changes rooms at the club house.

Do I need to be able to swim?
If you are not able to swim at least 50 m in your paddling clothes then you will be required to wear a personal flotation device (PFD) provided by the club.
Any paddler who wishes can wear a PFD regardless of their swimming ability.

How much does it cost to paddle?
For new paddlers, the first five paddles are free.
To continue paddling, you need to join the club. The Registration page can be found here.

Membership fees are set annually and consist of the:

  • IDBC Membership Fee which covers club membership, coaching, sweeps, and use of all equipment (boats, paddles, PFDs, etc) and club facilities; and
  • Dragon Boats NSW fee which covers insurance.

Active Kids Vouchers can be used to assist in paying Junior Membership.

If you wish to paddle in regattas you will need a club uniform (available from the club) and pay regatta fees.
